Death toll in flood disaster rises to four




The floods in five states claimed its fourth victim today, the latest being a man, whose body was found in a drain in Gemas Baru, Negeri Sembilan, this evening.

About 45,000 people are still in evacuation centres, a significant drop from the figure of nearly 50,000 people in the morning, as the floods showing signs of easing.

Gemas Fire and Rescue Department officer Jaafar Yusof told Bernama when contacted that the body of the man was found by passers-by at 5.30pm and contacted the department.




He said that based on the details on an identification card found inside the man's wallet, the victim was identified as Pareynthan Monivasagam, of Kampung Kasipillai, Kuala Lumpur.

Three deaths were reported previously, two in Johor and one in Malacca.

Meanwhile, the Road Transport Department (RTD) will not impose any charges for renewal of documents damaged during the floods in Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Johor and Pahang.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the ministry would also assist flood victims who needed help.

"I have directed RTD to use their vehicles like lorries and four wheel drivers to help in the evacuation of flood victims and send aid needed for them," he said in a statement here today.


Kong added that he had also instructed Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Berhad to provide the public with information of KTM services and continuously update such information.

"Those who are heading home to their respective hometowns for the Chinese New Year, I urge them to practice caution, observe traffic rules and drive carefully because the weather is not favourable. Driving during bad weather can easily cause accidents," he said.

In JOHOR BARU, a total of 42,111 people from 10,095 families were still at 238 evacuation centres at 6pm.

According to the state government's official portal at www.johordt.gov.my, there was an increase in the number of evacuees in Segamat, at 20,025 people from 4,855 families.

Other evacuees are in Kluang (6,840), 29 in Johor Baru, 3,706 in Muar, 3,268 in Batu Pahat, 690 in Pontian, 1,797 in Kota Tinggi, 99 in Mersing and 5,613 in Ledang.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak who visited the flooded areas said based on the briefing given on the latest flood situation, the worst was now over in Johor.

He reminded the people to remain on the alert.

Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar also visited the victims in several relief centres including Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Senai and Taman Senai Utama multipurpose hall.

Johor is the worst hit in the current wave of floods.

In KUANTAN, the floods subsided further with all the evacuees in Raub, one of the three affected districts, allowed to return home this evening.

A Pahang police spokesman said there were still 1,777 evacuees in relief centres, 1,687 of them in Rompin and the rest in Temerloh.

In MALACCA, the number of flood victims rose to 4,101 people compared to 3,396 at noon, mostly in Melaka Tengah, with 2,114 people.

The floods in Jasin however was subsiding, with only 419 people remaining in five centres, a flood operations room spokesman said.

The floods were also easing in Alor Gajah, with 1,568 people remaining in evacuation centres.
