KUALA TERENGGANU: A 15-YEAR-OLD member of the Terengganu junior cycling team was killed in an accident with a lorry here yesterday.

Mohd Shafiq Imran Mohd Shahril was on a daily training exercise with the rest of the team when the accident occurred at the Tepoh bridge on the Kuala Terengganu-Kelantan road, near Kampung Bukit Guntong here, at 9am.

The Form Three student from SM Bandar here, who joined the team in 2011, suffered serious bodily injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Sultanah Nur Zahirah hospital.

His mother, Tuan Jara Kamariah Tuan Ahmad, 41, when met at the hospital mortuary, described her son as a very quiet, but loving and kind-hearted person.

She said Shafiq had earlier spent the whole night by her side, pinching and rubbing her playfully until he fell asleep.

"He had never done that, but it did not occur to me that it was also the first and last time."

He was the eldest child of contractor Mohd Shahril Rashid, 39, and Kamariah, from Kampung Seberang Baroh, Chabang Tiga.

The couple have another son, Mohd Adam, 11.

The team's coach, Syed Mohd Husaini Syed Mazlan, 35, said they were on their way to Bukit Besi on a training exercise in preparation for a tournament in Perlis from June 19 to 23.

He and his assistant, Siti Sarah Muda, 20, followed the 45 cyclists in a van.

He said Shafiq was trying to avoid his friend, Che Ku Mohd Nazmi, 19, who was thrown off his bike after hitting a pothole, when he was hit by the lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

Besides Che Ku Nazmi, another cyclist Ahmad Fikri Ahmad Fadli, 16, was also thrown off his bike.

He said Che Ku Nazmi and Fikri suffered cuts and light injuries on the body.

Husaini described Shafiq as a good and disciplined cyclist.

"He has represented Terengganu in many state and national level tournaments since he was 13 and his death is a great loss to the team," he said when met at the mortuary.
