ALOR STAR: AN Indonesian woman was detained with 3.501kg of syabu, worth about RM665,000, at the Langkawi International Airport on Friday.

The suspect, 28, from Jakarta had arrived from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang when she was arrested about 11am.

State Customs Department director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Latif said officers ran a background check on the suspect after an airport scanner revealed an ambiguous object inside her bag.

"A package wrapped with aluminium foil was found hidden inside a special compartment of the bag.

"In the package were four small packets containing the drugs in the form of a crystal-like substance," he said here yesterday.

Investigations showed the suspect was a drug mule for an international drug trafficking syndicate to supplement her mother's income, who worked at a restaurant in her hometown.

According to her passport, the suspect had travelled to India on June 17 and stayed in the country for five days before flying to Kuala Lumpur.

On the modus operandi used, Aziz said the drug syndicate had wrapped the drugs inside the foil to avoid being detected by a scanner.

"It is the department's protocol to conduct physical checks on any bags or containers if something ambiguous is detected."
