Cops warn football fans to behave

Separate parking and entrances, and heavy police presence to ensure incident-free FA Cup semi-final today

KUALA LUMPUR: POLICE reminded football fans attending the FA Cup semi-final second leg match between Pahang and Johor Darul Takzim at the Bukit Jalil Stadium tonight to be on their best behaviour.

City police deputy chief Datuk Amar Singh said several measures had been implemented to ensure that the match proceeded without any incidents.

The second leg of the match was supposed to have been played at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Tuesday but had to be abandoned after fans of both sides gatecrashed the stadium and invaded the pitch.

Amar said measures had been taken to ensure the scenario did not recur.

"Among the steps taken are the segregation of parking areas and seating for Pahang and Johor supporters. This will also help ensure that supporters have easier access to the stadium through designated gates," he said.

Amar said the move was also to prevent any sort of provocation between the supporters of both sides.

He said police and the stadium management would put up signs and instructions for fans as to where they could park their vehicles.

"For example, Pahang supporters can park their vehicles at Parking A, B and areas along Bukit Komanwel, which is to the left of the VIP parking area. Their access and entry points will be colour coded red, yellow and green.

"Johor supporters can park their vehicles at Parking C, D and areas near the Nasional Sport Council building which are on the right side of the VIP parking area. They can enter the stadium through the blue and purple gates."

He said police and Rela members with Football Association of Malaysia officials will also be stationed at all stadium gates to monitor the supporters as they enter.

"We will conduct thorough checks on ticket holders. Please do not carry or bring in objects that we have forbidden as not only will the items be confiscated, those in possession can also be barred from entering the stadium."

He said the banned items included mineral water bottles, inflammable devices, sharp objects such as knives and sticks, crash helmets, liquor and vuvuzelas (horns).

"Those carrying dangerous weapons such as knives and sharp objects will be arrested as it is a criminal offence and punishable under the law," said Amar.

He said general duty officers, Rela and other police units will be stationed in and outside the stadium to maintain order tonight.

"This include the police K9 unit, the horse unit and also the mobile police unit," said Amar.

He said traffic police would also be stationed along the Kesas Highway, Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway and Damansara-Puchong Expressway to monitor traffic to the stadium.

"We have enough manpower to control the crowd. Come and enjoy the match but please adhere to the rule and regulations that we have put up to avoid any untoward incident," said Amar.

About 80,000 football fans are expected to fill the stadium to watch the game tonight. The gates open at 5.30pm.
