Body of Malaysian student killed in Jordan laid to rest

The body of a Malaysian student, Sumaiyah Romli, 21, who perished during an accident in Jordan on Friday was laid to rest at the Al-Bukhary Muslim cemetery, here.

Sumaiyah's body arrived at her family's house in Taman Mutiara here at at 12.35am today.

An entourage transporting the body of 21-year-old Sumaiyah Romli from Penang to Kedah arrived at the housing estate at 12.35am.

Several relatives, neighbours and the victim's friends thronged the house to pay their last respect to Sumaiyah, who was a Public Service Department (PSD) scholar and a first year astronomy and physics student at the University College London in Britain.

Also present to pay their last respect on behalf of the state government and the Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir was his political secretary Datuk Azimi Daim while Kedah Umno Youth deputy chief Haris Che Mat represented the party.


Earlier, Sumaiyah's body arrived at the Penang International Airport on a MH1166 Maskargo plane at 10.55pm after it departed from the Queen Alia International Airport in Amman at 2am (Jordan time).

Her father, Romli Hasan, 53, together with other 50 family members were present at the airport to receive the body.

Sumaiyah, who is the fourth among six siblings, was travelling inside a four-wheel drive vehicle with four of her friends when the vehicle skidded and plunged into a ravine between Petra and Aqabah, about 320 kilometres from Aman, Jordan.

She succumbed to massive head injuries while her friends survived the mishap and were admitted to the Queen Rania Abdullah Hospital in Petra for treatment.

The other passengers were Muhammad Nazirul Mubin Nasruddin, Mohamad Shukri Alias, Nur Ili Dayana Mazlan @ Masgelan and Humairak Ibrahim.
