WILLIAM YAU INQUEST: 'Body was found floating'

Fisherman tells coroner how boy's body was brought to main jetty

PETALING JAYA: A FISHERMAN related how he was having tea with his friends in a stall on Jan 24 when they saw the body of a boy floating in the river about 50m away from where they were.

Satarudin Kamal, 45, said they ran and tied a rope round the feet of the body, which was decomposed with the eyes missing and pulled it using a small boat to the main jetty at Kampung Sungai Sireh in Port Klang.

Satarudin was giving evidence in the inquest of 6-year-old William Yau Zhen Zhong, who went missing for about a week before his body was found floating in Sungai Klang early this year.

When asked by deputy public prosecutor Lee Keng Fatt if he had seen any young boy wondering around the area that day, Satarudin said he had not. He also told the inquest there were also no suspicious people in the area in the days leading up to Jan 24, when the body was found.

Earlier, Lim Say Kim, 27, who works as a mechanic at the motorcycle workshop owned by William's father, Yau Kok Kang, testified that Yau had never said anything about William to him.

He added that Yau loved all his three children equally.

When asked if he knew of William being taken to the doctor for any health problems, Lim said that it was usually when the boy had a flu or fever.

Lee then asked Lim if he knew about any injuries on William. Lim replied he knew of an injury which William had near the head.

Lim also told the inquest that the last time he saw William was about 6pm on Jan 16, the day he went missing, adding that the boy had looked normal.

Lim also testified that the night William went missing, he had helped the family comb the area around Onking Electronics in Putra Heights for nearly four hours, but failed to locate the boy.

The inquest had previously heard that William's parents had left their three children, Eric, 7, William, 6, and Cindy, 1, locked in the car, while they went into Onking Electronics.

Upon returning to the car, the mother found that William was missing.

William was found dead, floating face-up in Sungai Klang near Kampung Sungai Sireh, Port Klang, by fishermen on Jan 24.

Hearing before coroner Mohd Hezril Shaharil continues on Wednesday.
