Toddler drowns in pail of water

Boy wandered into bathroom while mum was on the phone

KUANTAN: BANK officer Mohamad Zawawi Husain and his wife, Surianti Zahari, had moved into their rented home here in January with their three young children.

They had been busy making plans to buy their dream home.

Their plans were dealt a cruel blow on Monday when their 14-month-old son drowned in a pail of water in the bathroom of their home at Taman Putra Putri here.

Mohamad Bilal was playing with his sister and a cousin, both 5, in the master bedroom under the supervision of Surianti, a teacher, who had just returned from her school.

Surianti, 34, left the room for a while to answer a phone call from Zawawi about 3.30pm.

Bilal is believed to have entered the bathroom at that time.

Surianti almost fainted when she later found his lifeless body with his head submerged in the half-full pail.

She immediately alerted Zawawi before rushing Bilal to the Permatang Badak health clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Grief-stricken Zawawi, who works in Kemaman, when met at his house yesterday, said he and his wife had just finished discussing their plans to buy a new house when Surianti called again to inform him about their son.

Zawawi said he had read reports about similar incidents, but never expected it to happen to his son.

"My wife, traumatised by the incident, no longer wants to stay here. We will temporarily stay at my mother's home nearby," he said, adding that his other son, Mohamad Eusoff, 8, was not at home during the incident.

Pointing at the red pail, Zawawi hoped this mishap would serve as a lesson to parents with young children.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said the case had been classified as sudden death.
