Straight fight in Gelang Patah

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman will face off in a straight fight for the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat.

A potential three-cornered fight for Johor’s hottest parliamentary seat ended when former soldier R. Rajendran withdrew his nomination papers before nominations closed.

The 55-year-old had initially come as an independent candidate against Ghani, the four-term Johor mentri besar, and DAP heavyweight Lim.

Rajendran, a retired army sergeant who is believed to be an MIC man, declined to comment about his withdrawal.

The two state seats under Gelang Patah will also see one-to-one fights involving heavyweights from Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and fresh faces from BN.

Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau will defend his Skudai seat against BN’s Liang Ah Chy while PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub will be going up against BN’s Datuk Dr Zaini Abu Bakar for the Nusajaya state seat.

Lim moved to Johor to lead PR’s charge to make further inroads in the birthplace of Umno and a BN stronghold.

In Election 2008, BN won 25 of the 26 federal seats in Johor against the DAP’s solitary win for the opposition. BN had a virtually clean sweep of the 56 state seats, picking up 50, while the DAP and PAS took four and two respectively.
