Speak up now, Penang folk urged




Pulau Tikus BN candidate Rowena Yam at the protest against the proposed undersea tunnel project yesterday.


With seven days to the polls on Sunday, Penangites have been urged to speak up against the pro posed multibillion-ringgit undersea tunnel project which DAP plans to built carry out build if it wins Penang again.back Penang.

Pulau Tikus Barisan Nasional candidate Rowena Yam said the people would not be able to have a say inabout the project after the general election.

She said that if they did not want to have a tunnel between Persiaran Gurney here and Bagan Ajamon the mainland, the only option was to speak up now.

“We must make our decision decide this week.

“If they build the tunnel, we will risk losing Persiaran Gurney, a beau tiful seafront we have inherited from our forefathers,” she told a mass gath ering against the project yesterday.

Yam said that at one of the forums on the proposed project earlier this month, she had attended several forums organised by non-governmental organisations here on the proposed tunnel and heard from an Australian town planner and architect Dr Peter Jensen had said that “all tunnels leak”. in a talk earlier this month.

The revelation was shocking, she said.

“We may face such risks. After building a mega structure like that, we will have to maintain it but what happens if the company cannot make enough money to do it? Does the burden fall back to the people?” she asked.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng re portedly said that the opposition pact in Penang was willing to risk losing votes over the tunnel project.

The gathering at Persiaran Gurney which was organised by the Citizens Awareness Chant Group (CHANT).

CHANT member Khoo Kay Peng said although the NGO was not re jecting the project out right outright, it was taking the caretaker state govern ment to task for failing to answer and address the people’s concerns about the undersea link, even after so much of it had been highlighted in the press media over the past last few months.

“We just want to know the details, like traffic volume projection for the tunnel, its alignment and impact.
