A 39-year-old man was shot dead by an assailant along Jalan Seremban-Tampin at the entrance to the Road Transport Department state headquarters here yesterday morning.

In the 9.30am incident, the victim, N. Ragunathan, who worked as a runner, was driving alone in his Proton Perdana to the RTD, when two men on a black-coloured Yamaha 125Z motorcycle pulled up alongside his car. As the car stopped along the road the pillion rider then jumped off the motorcycle and fired three shots at Ragunathan.

"The shots hit his head and body," said State Criminal Investigation Department Chief Assistant Commissioner Hamdan Majid at a press conference at the state police headquarters here yesterday. Hamdan said the assassins then escaped from the scene.

"We believe that they are locals based on their facial features as described by witnesses," he said.

Ragunathan's body was taken to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital.

Hamdan said that the police are still investigating the motive behind the killing.

He also said that the police are looking into whether the case is linked with two other murder cases here, which used the same modus operandi.

On April 14, Tan Kok Soon, 56, was shot dead by an assailant in front of his wife and two children while dining at the Oakland Commercial Centre, Seremban 2, here.

The assailant approached Tan and fired several shots at him before fleeing on a motorcycle.

Meanwhile, on April 12, J. James, a 45-year-old officer at a security company was shot dead by two hitmen on a motorcycle when he stopped his car at a traffic light at the intersection near Taman Labu Jaya and Taman AST here.

"We have yet to make any arrests on the two previous murder cases, but are checking if all three cases are linked," said Hamdan.
