Khairy prefers to not contest GE13

Khairy Jamaluddin prefers to not contest in Election 2013 and had informed Datuk Seri Najib Razak of his intention, the Umno Youth chief said today through a status update on his Facebook page.

The Rembau MP also reiterated his commitment to ensure Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the polls even if he is not nominated.

“I’ve informed the BN Chairman, Datuk Seri Najib, of my preference. That is I’m more keen to not contest in GE13. I’ve also told the public about this once upon a time,” Khairy said here, referring to his speech during the Umno’s 66th general assembly.

iry also said that he will accept whichever decision Najib will make comes nomination day.

“If asked to contest, I’ll heed it. If asked to step down, I’ll heed it as well,” he said.

The Youth chief (picture) called other leaders in the wing to hold on to the same principles and prove their loyalty to the party by not reacting negatively if they were not named as candidates.

Khairy asked the leaders to follow his lead, by still serving the party even with his lack of ministerial post, which has fuelled ridicules and criticisms from his political enemies.

The Umno man won the Rembau seat in Negeri Sembilan with 5,746 majority, after defeating PKR’s popular activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegubard.

He was however not elected to any ministerial post when Najib restructured his Cabinet after taking over from Abdullah in 2009.

His rival for the post of Youth chief in Umno’s party election in 2009, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, was however elected Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry.

The Rembau MP’s rapid rise in Malaysian politics while his father-in-law Abdullah was in power had sparked both admiration and criticisms by political commentators.

Khairy had previously expressed his concern for internal sabotage among Umno members, and called for them to stand behind their president or risk being defeated in the next general election.

“What can defeat (Umno) is ourselves,” Khairy said when approached at the end of Umno’s general assembly in November last year.
