GE13: DAP members will have authorisations signed by PAS or PKR

The man in Penang: Guan Eng stressing a point at Wisma DAP in Rangoon Road.

: DAP candidates nationwide will head to nomination centres carrying two sets of authorisation letters one from the DAP and another signed either by PAS or PKR.

The DAP decided on this after the Registrar of Societies (ROS) did not withdraw its non-recognition of the central executive committee notice by yesterday's 3pm deadline set by the party.

Party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said if the DAP symbol was not accepted at the nomination centres, then its candidates were likely to contest using the PAS symbol in the peninsula and PKR's in Sabah and Sarawak.

He said each DAP candidate would be given two letters of authorisation one from the DAP signed by him as secretary-general and another signed by the PAS secretary-general or PKR president.

He described this as the last resort to ensure that DAP candidates were not rejected by returning officers.

“We will only use either PAS or PKR symbols if the returning officer does not accept the letter of authorisation from DAP,” he said at Wisma DAP last night.

On Thursday, the ROS had faxed a letter to the party to de-recognise its central executive committee elected last December in Penang, due to vote tallying errors and complaints from DAP members that about 700 delegates were not notified of the AGM.

Lim said if the CEC was not recognised, then the letter of authorisation could not be issued by him as secretary-general.

In Johor Baru, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said the result would either be “very good or very bad” if DAP was not allowed to use its rocket symbol.

He said voters would be confused if the party were to contest using the PAS and PKR symbols.

Kit Siang, who is contesting the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat, also announced that 57-year-old former senator S. Ramakrishnan would be the DAP's candidate for the Labis parliamentary seat.

The DAP will be contesting 51 parliamentary and 103 state seats in the general election.
