have crippled the activities of a foreign syndicate that used chemicals to scrape gold from jewellery items in the pretext of cleaning the jewels given by the customers.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief ACP Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said the police had uncovered their activities after picking two Chinese nationals and a local woman at the Sepang international low-cost terminal on Wednesday.

He said a police team from the commercial crime unit nabbed the suspects aged between 30 and 40 after a month-long surveillance.

“We seized gold and jewellery items worth more than RM70,000 which were about to leave for China. Initial investigations revealed that 30 people have fallen victims to the syndicate,” he said during a press conference at the district police headquarters in Bertam near here today.

ACP Abdul Rahman said in a follow-up operation that the police raided a house in Raub, Pahang, which they have been using for the last two years and seized several equipment, chemicals and cash that were used for their activities.

He said their modus operandi was to go in a group and offer to clean up gold jewellery items for free of charge.

“The victims usually realize their jewellery have become small in size and have reduced in weight after the members of the syndicate have left the place,” he said.

ACP Abdul Rahman said the syndicate members would later gather to collect scraped gold dust from the items.

He said so far, they have received only one report from a victim in Tasek Gelugor, who has incurred RM10,000 worth of losses.

He believes that many could have fallen victims to the syndicate and he urged the victims to lodge a report so that the police to investigate the matter further
