Anti-Lynas group to stage protest on Tuesday

Anti-Lynas group Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) will stage a peaceful protest on Tuesday

Anti-Lynas group Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) will stage a peaceful protest on Tuesday against the Australian miner’s bid to gag alleged defamatory statements on the company’s controversial rare earth plant near Kuantan, Pahang.

“SMSL and several bus-loads of supporters from different places will converge outside the Kuala Lumpur High Court by 9.30am on Tuesday 19th June to stage a peaceful action,” the pressure group’s chairman Tan Bun Teet said yesterday in a statement.

He added the protest is in response to “Lynas’ defamation action to gag SMSL from exercising its constitutional rights as a citizens group to highlight the risks and hazards of the Lynas project”.

“Not only has Lynas been aggressive in pushing ahead its controversial project which risks polluting our land, our river and our sea, it is also trying to shut us up.”

Tan said buses are available to ferry concerned citizens to KL “to show Lynas that we will not be defeated”.

Those interested in partaking the demonstration are told to SMS 012- 989 0687 with their name and IC number to book a seat.

Last month, the High Court here rejected Lynas Corp’s application for an ex-parte injunction SMSL making allegedly defamatory statements on the company’s controversial rare earth plant near Kuantan, Pahang.

The company is now trying again through an inter-parte injunction, which the court will decide upon on Tuesday.

Lynas had also filed a suit against online news portal Free Malaysia Today, citing the article “Lynas Must Go” dated March 6 also contained false and defamatory statements.

The company is seeking general damages, exemplary and aggravated damages, costs and interests as well as other relief deemed fit by the court.
