Deathly silence engulfs Sepang Italian rider Simoncelli killed in crash at Sepang circuit



Silence filled the air at the Sepang International Circuit after MotoGP fans came to know about the horrific crash involving Marco Simoncelli.

Student Yusof Haq, 14, who was at the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix yesterday, said the thunderous roars of engines and passionate screaming of fans turne

“I am terribly sad over his death as he is talented; my thoughts are with him always.

“We were all shocked to see him knocked off his bike and hit by the other rider,” he said yesterday.

He added that some in the crowd started to throw mineral water bottles onto the track out of frustration after the announcement to cancel the race was made.



Another fan, Naim Yusof, 16, expressed sadness over the accident.

“We were not sure what had happened as we were seated quite far away but I saw a tweet saying that Marco had died,” he said.

A 55-second video was also uploaded on YouTube showing scenes leading to the crash, and shortly after his death “Marco Simoncelli” had trended on Twitter.

Malaysians also shared their sadness and condolences on social network websites.

AirAsia's chief steward and major shareholder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes offered his condolences to Simoncelli on his Twitter account.

“My thoughts to Marco at MotoGP. People forget how dangerous the sport is,” he said.

A twitter by the name of RifdahAdilahSofyan said: “Rest in Peace Marco Simoncelli. Glad to know a lot of people cared about him.

“You are an awesome rider and you will be missed.”

Deputy Youth and Sports Miniser Gan Ping Sieu expressed his condolences to Simoncelli's family.

He said an investigation would be conducted.
