DAP wins 12 outright, expects three more in Sarawak

The DAP has won 12 out of its 15 contested seats in the hornbill state, in the most closely watched election since the political tsunami in 2008, and what is said to be an indication as to whether Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will call an early general election.

The party scored the biggest upset in Sarawak's 10th state election when DAP's Ling Sie Kiong defeated SUPP chairman Tan Sri George Chan Hong Nam for the Piasau state seat with a majority of 1,590 votes. The Election Commission (EC) said Ling took 5,998 votes against the incumbent who only received 4,408 votes. There were 73 spoilt votes out of the 10,479 ballots cast.

According to DAP sources, the confirmed seats won so far are N9 Padungan, N10 Pending, N12 Kota Sentosa, N13 Batu Kawah, N39 Repok, N40 Meradong, N45 Bukit Assek, N46 Dudong, N48 Pelawan, N59 Kidurong, N63 Piasau and N64 Pujut.

“For now, it looks like DAP will score a victory in 10 seats (and) win three seats. It looks like two will be lost,” said Zairil Khir Johari, political secretary to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

In a major upset, unofficial results show BN’s SUPP chief Tan Sri George Chan has lost Piasau to DAP’s Ling Sie Kiong.

DAP’s victory of 12 seats is said to deliver the lion’s share of PR’s victories.
